OAKLAND — A bicyclist died Thursday afternoon after she collided head-on with an SUV in the Oakland hills, police said Friday, She was identified by the coroner’s office as Tatyana Schmid, 28, of Oakland, who according to friends and social media sites was a blogger and tour guide for Backroads, a well-known hiking and biking company, The collision happened about 4:30 p.m, Thursday in the 7000 block of Skyline Boulevard near Elverton Drive, Police said the Schmid was riding eastbound and approaching a sweet vintage miniature ballet shoes bend in the road, At the same time a Chevrolet Traverse was traveling westbound, also approaching the bend in the road..

Police said the bicyclist  veered into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with the SUV.  She died at the scene. The SUV driver, a man who lives in another city, remained on the scene and is cooperating with investigators, police said. Police said drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the collision but that it appears Schmid may have been speeding. The collision remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call traffic investigators at 510-777-8570. In a post on the social media site Couchsurfing, Schmid said she was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and besides being a seasonal trip leader for Backroads, she sang in two Bay Area folk bands, and recently started teaching yoga in Berkeley.

And we have a winner: In March, I asked readers to identify a mystery object (pictured above) that I found at an appraisal event last year in San Mateo. More than 165 folks weighed in, Elizabeth Sevillano of Boulder Creek thought it may have held mints or pills, Lisa McCurdy believed it was for crushing herbs, Michael Fresco guessed it was a candlewick trimmer, Helen Barnes of Livermore concluded it was for sweeping up crumbs (a silent butler), But it was only reader Gene Della Maggiore of San Jose who got it right, That may be due to fact that the former firefighter has a penchant for collecting small sterling oddities, including a number of sweet vintage miniature ballet shoes rare baby rattles..

He correctly identified the object as a lemon squeezer. Used at the turn of the last century and owned by people who had everything, these squeezers are a rare find today. They were used at tea to avoid soiling one’s fingers and to keep the acidic juice from spraying table linens and getting into eyes. Thanks to each of you for your submissions. Gene gets to have lunch with me in the near future. Prohibition Party in Morgan Hill: The 4th annual Speakeasy: A Prohibition Party happens on June 23.
