If you aren’t already familiar with SFDanceWorks, it might be because the dance troupe didn’t even exist before 2016. But now is a good time to acquaint yourself with this local treasure. The company’s inaugural season two years ago sold out each night. Its second season pulled off the same achievement. And its third season, June 8-10 at the San Francisco’s Cowell Theater, looks to be a three-peat. The main ingredients in this recipe for success are the right team of performers and finely-honed movement compositions. It’s no accident, SFDW’s dancers and choreographers have worked with such internationally renowned companies as San Francisco Ballet, Nederlands Dans Theater, Stuttgart Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, LINES Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Boston Ballet, and Houston Ballet.

“It’s important that we are creating new works, but it’s also important to keep older work alive,” says artistic director James Sofranko. “When we perform pieces that have become classics in their own right, the dancers are inspired to step up their levels of technique and artistry, The audience and younger dancers also need to see who has paved the way to where we are now.”, To that end, the Season 3 program includes a re-staging of Spaniard Nacho Duato’s “Jardí Tancat,” originally created for Nederlands Dans Theater in 1983, The modern ballet for six dancers employs music composed and sung by Maria del Mar Bonet that is sourced from Catalonian folk tales, Duato’s work red sparkle ballet flats is intended to express the hardships and desperation of poor Catalonian farmers as they work the land..

Penny Saunders comes back for a third turn this season as she looks to become the resident choreographer. For the program she is re-working a work titled “Snap,” a duet she originally created in a workshop at Hubbard Street. “I wanted to make something informal and playful, so I took something simple like pat-a-cake,” she says of the work featuring music by Olafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm. “It’s a bit of a game when you’re first meeting someone. A little flirty — I’ll tap you here and you tap me there. We took the actual pat-a-cake and deconstructed it, made new sections and put it back together.”.

The creators of two premieres haven’t chosen titles for their pieces, One is by Sofranko, who confesses, “I don’t want to give away too much because it’s still evolving, I have the idea of a community and how it deals red sparkle ballet flats with outside influences, but without being too literal, The music is so emotional — Schubert’s Impromptus — and I’m really moved by them so the piece does have a bit of a story.”, As a bonus, pianist Ronny Michael Greenberg will be performing the Schubert works live..

Newly appointed associate artistic director Danielle Rowe has a commissioned a score by Alton San Giovanni for her latest choreographic endeavor. It will be performed live by instrumentalist David Knight, a member of the Warsaw-based band Low Roar, which is fronted by former East Bay singer-songwriter-musician Ryan Karazija. “I’m doing quite a large piece — eight dancers — and it’s longer, around 20 minutes,” she says. “I’ve worked with the composer before. He’s young, from the pop world, studied music for film, and he’s a great collaborator. We created the concept together, but I don’t want to delve into it too much because I want the space to change my mind.”.

As red sparkle ballet flats Sofranko transitions from dancing as a soloist for an Francisco Ballet to taking the reins as new artistic director at Grand Rapids Ballet, he is adamant about his commitment to SFDanceWorks as well, “I’ve put a lot of my heart and soul into this company,” he says, “and it’s important it stays around and continues to grow,  And Dani (Rowe) is someone who believes in that vision as well, I’ll be back in the summers for SFDW.”, Rowe is stepping in to cover the onsite details while Sofranko is in Michigan, Her enthusiasm and sharp intelligence are seemingly necessary assets to bridge the shift in roles, With so many capable hands, the future of this dynamic troupe will surely be bright..
