When Anuradha Nag arrived in San Jose from Kolkata (Calcutta) in the spring of 1992, she didn’t have a plan. Her marriage, which had been arranged by her family, anchored her to the South Bay, but she had resisted following the proscribed path to medical school followed by so many relatives, instead heeding her calling for kathak. “ I knew I had to dance,” she says. “I never let anything come between me and my dance.”. Nag has spent the past quarter century inculcating successive generations with her passion for the classical North Indian tradition known for presenting epic Vedic tales with strikingly graceful postures, deft footwork and emotionally vivid facial expressions (an actorly skill set particularly associated with the Lucknow style which Nag embodies). On Friday, her Tarangini School of Kathak Dance celebrates the 80th birthday of her guru, Pandit Birju Maharaj, an international creative force who has advanced kathak as a dancer, choreographer, vocalist, poet and teacher.

Billed as “Parampara,” the event features a performance by Maharaj accompanied by tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, while also showcasing five generations of Maharaj’s kathak lineage, including his senior most disciple Saswati Sen, his youngest son and daughter Deepak Maharaj and Mamta Maharaj, respectively, his grandchildren Ragini Maharaj, Tribhuwan Maharaj and Shinjini Kulkarni and Tarangini students, Hussain’s presence on stage is one sure sign of the reverence with which Birju Maharaj is held,  “He always makes himself available,” Nag says, “Hussain-ji says he has learned so much from Maharaj-ji and the concept of kathak, If Maharaj-ji is there, I have to play with him, Performing together pointe shoes, dance shoes, pointe dance shoes, dance jewelry, dance necklace, dance, pointe, ballet teacher, ballet teacher, dan over the years, they have an understanding, Everything is impromptu, It’s all chemistry on stage.”..

Growing up in a progressive family where girls were expected to get a good education (with an eye toward medical school), Nag fell under the sway of Maharaj as a child. She excelled as a dancer at home, and when Nag moved to the Bay Area, sarod genius and teacher Ali Akbar Khan gave her an invaluable boost. He not only presented her at a 1992 summer concert, he sat through the two-hour performance and garlanded her with flowers afterwards, a rare anointment. As Silicon Valley’s Indian population expanded, Nag was well-positioned to offer training in a beloved classical art form. Students often start studies with her at 7 or 8 and continue until graduating from high school and beyond. Over the years, she’s trained more than 1,500 dancers. “Gradually, things started falling into play,” she says. “I had no idea it would grow into this. I just love what I do. I love all my children. They walk in, and I know how they’re feeling, what kind of day they’ve had, because I know them so well.”.

Over a quarter century, she’s also seen big changes in the lives of her students, changes that seem to be accelerating, “Even 10 pointe shoes, dance shoes, pointe dance shoes, dance jewelry, dance necklace, dance, pointe, ballet teacher, ballet teacher, dan years ago, I didn’t see children being so stressed out, particularly about getting into colleges,” she says, “That’s affecting their dance, But students are also choosing to stay close by because they want to keep dancing, I have students at Berkeley, Stanford and Davis, but also UC San Diego and UCLA who come back to study every six weeks, I have students who study via Skype.”..

Technology can facilitate the transmission of kathak, but its human essence unfolds face to face. Friday’s “Parampara” celebration captures the life blood of an art form that continues to evolve, while hewing closely to the narratives and movements that have defined it for centuries. In honoring Birju Maharaj and his progeny, Nag hopes to highlight the creative lineage. “The world should know the generations,” she says. “Maharaj-ji is a genius, a multi-faceted artist who’s reached that peak. I don’t know if we’ll have someone like him again.”.
